Quran and Mental Health

The way others talk to us can have a profound effect on our mental health, influencing how we view ourselves, feel about the world, and even how we process our emotions. It affects our self-worth, and negative language—like criticism, belittling, or constant judgment—can make us doubt ourselves. Over time, this can damage self-esteem and contribute to feelings of inadequacy or worthlessness. Communication that is aggressive, passive-aggressive, or overly critical can increase stress and anxiety. We might worry about future interactions, overthink what was said, or feel like we're constantly walking on eggshells. Repeated negative interactions may contribute to long-term issues like depression or emotional numbness. Negative language, especially if it’s dismissive or condescending, can demotivate us, make us feel like our efforts aren’t worthwhile, and sometimes lead to giving up on goals altogether. Negative interactions can lead to a critical or harsh inner voice, where we internalize others' negativity and repeat it back to ourselves. The words others use and the tone they set play a crucial role in our mental well-being. Positive interactions can build resilience.

Quran very beautifully explains it and helps us with the solution, indeed it is a blessing to understand the perspective of our mental health care in the Quran.

يونس: 65]

The verse quoted, “And let not their speech grieve you. Indeed, honor [due to power] belongs to Allah entirely. He is the Hearing, the Knowing” (Quran 10:65), offers profound insights, especially in the context of mental health and emotional resilience. Here are some reflections on its significance:

1. Resilience Against Negative Speech

This verse encourages individuals not to be affected by the negative words or criticism of others. It promotes emotional resilience by reminding believers that their worth is not defined by others' opinions. People Just see you from their perspective and say what they hold in their own mind.

2. Divine Sovereignty

The acknowledgment that honor and power belong to Allah serves as a reminder that ultimate authority lies with Him. This can provide comfort and perspective, especially when facing challenges or opposition. The strong belief in accepting Allah and His blessings always strengthens the human with the power of self-consciousness.

3. Awareness of Allah’s Attributes

The verse highlights Allah as “the Hearing, the Knowing,” which reassures believers that their struggles and feelings are understood by Allah Kareem. This can foster a sense of connection and support.

4. Encouragement to Focus on the Divine

By shifting focus from external validation to the recognition of Allah’s greatness, individuals can find peace. This shift can help mitigate feelings of anxiety and inadequacy. This shift can make a strong impact on human values and things that can affect or can't affect at all.

5. Promoting Inner Peace

Understanding that one’s honor and dignity come from Allah can lead to greater inner peace, reducing the impact of external negativity on mental health. Once we believe that Allah loves every human being without any discrimination, we feel empowered and loved, which is a great source of human peace.

Conclusion

This verse serves as a powerful reminder to cultivate resilience and find solace in faith. It encourages individuals to seek strength from their relationship with Allah, which can be instrumental in navigating emotional challenges and fostering a positive mental state.
